Clinical Presentation & Protocol
Patient Usually Complains Of
6-month-old infant brought in by parents with a 3-day history of copious clear rhinorrhea, low-grade fever (38.1C), and a worsening harsh cough. Parents note poor feeding (taking only half of usual bottle volume) and rapid breathing.
Clinical Examination Findings
Fussy but consolable. Growth parameters: Weight 50th percentile, Length 60th percentile. Anterior fontanelle is flat and soft. Capillary refill < 2 seconds.
Treatment Protocol
Suction nares with saline drops stat. Trial of nebulized hypertonic saline. Admit to pediatric ward for IV hydration and high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) oxygen support. Contact/Droplet precautions.
