Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, Hypermobility Type

ICD-10 Code
Q79.6

Genetic connective tissue disorder characterized by joint hypermobility, skin hyperextensibility, and tissue fragility.

Clinical Presentation & Protocol

Patient Usually Complains Of

Patient presents with chronic polyarthralgia, recurrent joint subluxations, and generalized hypermobility. Reports history of easy bruising, delayed wound healing, and persistent musculoskeletal fatigue. Symptoms exacerbated by physical activity; no history of major vascular complications or organ rupture. Beighton score assessment performed.

Clinical Examination Findings

General: Patient appears well-developed. Skin: Soft, velvety texture, mild hyperextensibility noted. Musculoskeletal: Generalized joint hypermobility confirmed via Beighton score [X/9]. Evidence of joint laxity in small and large joints. No signs of acute inflammatory arthritis. Cardiovascular: Heart sounds regular, no murmurs suggestive of valvular pathology.

Treatment Protocol

Management plan: Physical therapy focusing on joint stabilization and strengthening of periarticular muscles. Avoidance of high-impact activities. Pain management with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) as needed. Referral to cardiology for baseline echocardiogram to screen for aortic root dilation. Orthopedic consultation for recurrent subluxations.
