Clinical Presentation & Protocol
Patient Usually Complains Of
Patient presents with acute wrist pain following a fall on an outstretched hand (FOOSH). Reports localized pain at the radial aspect of the wrist, exacerbated by thumb movement and grip. No history of prior wrist trauma.
Clinical Examination Findings
Patient is in no acute distress, alert and oriented. Vitals stable. General musculoskeletal survey unremarkable except for the affected upper extremity.
Treatment Protocol
Immobilization in a thumb spica splint/cast. Strict non-weight bearing on the affected limb. Referral for follow-up imaging in 10-14 days if initial X-rays are inconclusive. Consider surgical consultation for displaced fractures.
