Clinical Presentation & Protocol
Patient Usually Complains Of
Patient presents with acute right wrist pain following a fall onto an outstretched hand (FOOSH). Reports localized pain in the anatomical snuffbox, exacerbated by thumb movement and grip. No numbness or tingling in the distal digits. No prior history of wrist trauma or surgery.
Clinical Examination Findings
Physical examination of the right wrist reveals localized tenderness over the anatomical snuffbox and scaphoid tubercle. Axial loading of the thumb elicits significant pain. Range of motion is limited by pain in extension and radial deviation. Neurovascular status is intact with palpable radial pulse and capillary refill < 2 seconds.
Treatment Protocol
Immobilization of the right wrist in a thumb spica splint/cast. Strict non-weight bearing on the right upper extremity. Referral to orthopedic hand surgery for follow-up and potential surgical fixation. Prescribed NSAIDs for pain management and inflammation.
